Preparing Your Child for the First Day of School

The first day of school is often the hardest for your child. It will take time for them to adjust to a new setting and meet new people. They can feel scared or anxious, but it’s okay. These feelings are valid. What matters is you, parents, will be there to guide them along the way and help them feel excited to go to school.

To help you, below are some tips you can do to prepare them for their first day of school:

  • Let them practice a morning routine at least a week before classes start. Wake them up early, let them eat breakfast, brush their teeth, and dress for school every day.
  • Visit the school before the first day. Let them meet their teacher and see their classroom. Tour them around the school so they can be familiar with the environment.
  • Find time to bring them school supply shopping. Let them choose the notebooks, pencils, pencil case, and bag they’ll be using. This way, they’ll be excited to use them.
  • Talk to your child about how they feel and acknowledge these feelings. Ask them what they are excited to learn about and what they are worried about.
